Take time to serve and volunteer this year at the local Sand Springs Animal Welfare facility! Whether you have an hour, or a whole day, the staff welcomes all to help out with their adorable animals!
The Sand Springs Animal Control Facility enforces local ordinances by servicing the city of Sand Springs and the surrounding communities in animal control and animal welfare by rescuing small sized stray animals, and working bite reports around the community. The shelter houses stray animals such as dogs, cats, bunnies, and chickens at the facility and places them up for adoption or rescue. They additionally perform transports for animals around the community that have a home.
We spoke with Tracy L. Arvidson, who is the Animal Welfare Coordinator at the Sand Springs Animal Control Facility. We initially reached out to Tracy due to their overwhelming need for volunteers at the shelter, and to find out what we could do as a community to help. Tracy explained that they are always needing volunteers to assist with some of the day to day duties at the shelter. Specifically, volunteers can help walk the dogs at the facility, play with the cats, perform cleaning duties around the shelter, give some of the animals baths, teach them tricks, and so many other wholesome duties for all of the animal lovers out there. “We need people to come and be cat cuddlers,” Tracy explained.. “even people who come teach the dogs things like how to sit or walk on a leash”. Another opportunity to come help volunteer with the shelter would be to help with some of their offsite adoption events that they have for the animals.
Tracy stated that you have to be 18 years old to volunteer, but if you are under 18 you are welcome to come in with a parent. “We have schedules for those who walk the dogs, the cat volunteers have more of a loose schedule, but we can certainly talk to anyone who is interested and get them all set up”. She said that the best way to get involved is to just reach out to them and let them know you want to be involved and they will get you started.
If you are interested in adopting, you can contact the animal shelter or come to their facility and they will help you find an animal that is a good match. Currently their prices are $75 to adopt a dog and $50 to adopt a cat. All of the animals are spayed, neutered, and vaccinated before they find their home. It was a pleasure meeting with Tracy as well as meeting all of the sweet, furry friends in the facility who deserve a forever home.
