Did you know that over 48 million households in the U.S. own a dog? Similarly, close to 32 million households own at least one cat. Even so, there are still over 70 million stray dogs and around 58 million stray cats.
Sand Springs Animal Welfare is home to more than seventy-eight fur babies. They provide top care and housing for as many animals as they can. The shelter is currently at capacity, but there are great things to come. The previously approved GO Bond will fund a brand new animal shelter. The process has already begun and is set to take between two and three years. They just received drawings from architects with plans for the building and are so excited to get things moving.
How can we as Sandites contribute to the cause? Here are three ways:
Adopt. There are so many cats and dogs of all breeds and personality types waiting to meet their new parents. You can see pictures and short biographies of local animals available for adoption on the website. You can also come meet your potential new fur child in person at the adopt-a-thon on September 24th between 11am and 2pm at Case Center.
If you can’t adopt, donate. Donating no longer just involves putting a dollar in the jar. While direct donations can be made on the website, there are also unconventional ways to give. Sand Springs Animal Welfare has set up an Amazon wishlist as well as a Cuddly wishlist where you can get your shopping fix for a good cause. All methods of donating are greatly appreciated.
Last, but certainly not least, Spay and Neuter your pets! Ask your vet for more information about local discount clinics.
