Here within the community of Sand Springs we have the opportunity to share your story as well as our communities in a segment we call Local Lives. Local Lives challenges us as a community in the ways that we can best serve each other and meet the needs of those around us, it inspires us to make a difference and not only be a part of Sand Springs, but call it home as well. Today, we are sitting down with the Branch Manager of our very own local Sand Springs Salvation Army, Mary Bechtold, to hear her passion and heart for our very own community.
Mary was fortunate to have grown up and lived in Sand Springs since 1995 back when she was in 9th grade at ClydeBoyd. The community in Sand Springs has made this feel like it is truly the first place she can call home. Mary is involved with the Sand Springs Women’s Chamber, whose main focus is literacy within the community. Some of her favorite family activities include her daughter taking horseback riding lessons at Newberry Farms, going boating with their boat at The Harbor, and eating ice cream at the Big Dipper. One of her favorite memories is in the midst of tragedies such as tornadoes and floods, the way the community comes together to serve each other and make Sand Springs feel like home.
Mary, as a Branch Manager at Salvation Army Sand Springs, makes sure after school programs run correctly for children and youth, managing safety within the programs, being involved in local community events and outreach, running flag football and cheerleading programs, and managing small ball: 4, 5, and 6 year old basketball. She also encourages students and youth to get involved and serve in their local Salvation Army programs, such as Ringing the Bell and assisting families during Christmas by joining an Angel Tree spot. Students and youth are also welcome to apply for one of the Salvation Army’s many scholarship opportunities.
