We’ve all seen movies where people are stalked, attacked, robbed or harassed. Much worse, we’ve seen these things happen in real life; maybe it’s even happened to you.  Wouldn’t you like to able to defend yourself in a situation like that.  At the very least, wouldn’t you like to be able to do an AWESOME Jackie Chan impression in front of your friends?  Here’s your chance! We talked with Kevin Phelps, Iraq Campaign Veteran & jiu jitsu instructor, to learn more about jiu jitsu and how YOU can get involved!
Kevin has done two tours in Iraq as an Infantry Soldier.  For that, we salute you!  He is now a jiu jitsu instructor out of the Triton Fight Center and is a purple belt under Piet Wilhelm and the Renato Tavares Association.  He has three little girls who all train and compete in jiu jitsu as well. You could say we trust that he knows what he’s talking about!

So exactly what is jiu jitsu? It is a martial art based off the idea of a smaller, weaker opponent defending themselves against a larger, stronger opponent.  This is achieved through joint manipulation, choke holds, leverage and weight distribution.  Sounds like it could come in handy one day, right?
After Kevin’s Iraq tours, he began struggling with PTSD.  He realized that he needed something to help him focus and release those emotions because past efforts with the VA weren’t helping.  That is when he heard that there were veterans at the Triton Fight Center and decided to go to a free class.  He has been going ever since. For him, it has become a daily part of who he is.  It’s become a way of life for him.  If he doesn’t do it one day, he doesn’t feel the same.  It’s a complete positive emotional outlet.  “When you are training, you can’t think about anything but what your next move is or you will get submitted.  So all your problems, worries or cares are gone because you’re focused on that precise moment.  It’s invigorating.”

He began teaching almost three years ago and teaches all ages, children and adults.  One of the biggest challenges that he has faced during teaching is learning how to explain things to children.  At first, it was difficult for him to put into words, for children, how to complete a technique.  Now he has realized that if you can teach a six year old how to use an armbar or pull off a choke hold, you can pretty much teach anyone.  It has helped him overcome some adversity as well as other problems in his life.

Although Kevin’s PTSD is what pulled him into jiu jitsu, he has stayed for more than that.  He loves it when he sees a student pull off a submission at a tournament that he taught them.  It’s added satisfaction and fulfillment when they win because he know that they are learning something they will carry with them for life.  Something that could, potentially, save their life or someone else’s.  Kevin believes that “Jiu jitsu is applicable in all aspects of life.  It teaches discipline, focus and good character.”

In Kevin’s opinion, this is the best martial art for women because of the fact that it is not based on strength and 95% of all fights and attacks end up on the ground; which is what jiu jitsu teaches you.  On top of that it promotes great health and a positive lifestyle.  He recommends it for anyone and everyone of all ages!  His classes are held at HillSpring Church in Sand Springs on the last Tuesday of each month at 6pm.  It’s completely free for men and women of every age!!  If you’re interested in training more often, the Triton Fight Center is what you should check out!  They offer 3 free classes so that you can make sure it is a good fit for you.  Go to www.tritonfightcenter.com to see their schedule!
