AC and the Moondogs
Alan Copeland is an insurance agent in Sand Springs, but he moonlights as a lead guitarist for his family band, AC and the MoonDogs. During the day, Alan helps Sandites purchase coverage for various auto, home, and life insurance policies. When the weekend arrives, Alan and the rest of the band get together to play for company banquets, festivals, private parties, and worship services.
The band features Alan’s wife, Natalie, who is a vocalist, and their two sons, Andy and Paul, as well as local musician Alex Collins. On lead guitar and bass guitar are Alan and Andy, then Paul is lead singer and rhythm guitarist and Alex plays drums.
“As a family, music has always been our life,” Alan says. Alan started playing guitar when he was 19, and Natalie has always sang in church and at weddings. At an early age, Andy started playing the piano and later learned how to play the guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. Paul began playing the drums at an early age and later picked up the guitar and ukulele, as well.
When the band needed a drummer, Alex Collins came to mind. “We knew about Alex, so we had him sit in with us in a rehearsal,” Alan says, “and it’s been history ever since.”
“We play mostly classic rock,” Alan says, “along with our own originals.”
AC and the Moon Dogs love playing songs by the Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Police, the Eagles, 3 Dog Night, Savoy Brown, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Beatles. Currently, one of their favorite hits to play is “Superstitious” by Stevie Wonder. “It’s a great tune, [and we have a] great time playing it,” Alan says.
“[Music] is a passion for us all,” Alan says, “and we love getting everybody in the groove and creating a good time for everyone.”
“[Music] is therapy for your mind and soul,” Alan says. “Music moves me and is constantly going through my mind ???? the rhythms and the beats ???? and it allows me to relax and enjoy life.”
